The Machine Bet / the lag
nine seconds against eighty milliseconds

The whole advantage is time

A person takes about nine seconds from deciding to an accepted price: reading the market, checking the stake, pressing the button, waiting for the confirmation. A machine takes about eighty milliseconds. If the price can move inside that window - which it can, in any market that is still being priced - then the machine is not betting better, it is betting earlier, and the earlier price is the whole edge.

Direct answer

A person takes a median 9.4 seconds to place a bet and a machine 0.08 seconds - about 117 times faster. Where a price moves inside that window, the machine takes the earlier price: in the sampled markets the difference was worth 2.40 on a 100.00 stake, which is the entire edge and has nothing to do with choosing a better bet.

Which way the window moves

A price does not only shorten. For a machine, a window is useful whichever side the price goes, because an automated rule can wait for a number and a person has to decide now. That is why the honest framing of the advantage is certainty about the entry price, not a claim that the machine picks winners: the sample flagged no difference in the selections chosen, only in the price taken for them.

This desk explains the arithmetic of the lag. It does not describe how to build a faster client, and it is not an argument that automated placement is allowed - it is the opposite, as the rules page sets out.
